Free Legal counsel in Bangladesh can boost social services
Barrister Sanwar Hossain, Partner, S Hossain & Associates Law firm in Bangladesh participating in a round table discussion.
Barrister Sanwar Hossain participated in a roundtable, "Lawyers as Changemakers," organised by iProbono at The Daily Star Centre. The discussion brought together eleven law firms and five non-government and legal aid organisations to explore how lawyers in Bangladesh — alongside firms and academics — can offer free services and skills, including research and corporate advice, to civil society and NGOs to enhance operations and ensure legal rights for disadvantaged and marginalised communities.
iProbono is a non-profit platform connecting NGOs, social enterprises and civil society organisations with providers of free legal support. Operating globally since 2009 with offices in London and New Delhi (and backing from the Ford Foundation and Commonwealth Foundation), it is now expanding its reach into Bangladesh. The roundtable explored existing pro bono culture, the gaps that remain, and potential solutions to scale such initiatives — with contributions from S Hossain & Associates, Mahbub & Company, Dr Kamal Hossain and Associates, Children's Charity Bangladesh, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust, Manusher Jonno Foundation, the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association, and others.
Coverage of the roundtable originally appeared in The Daily Star. Read the full article on the publisher's website for the complete report and quotations from participating speakers.
